Breathe. Take a moment and stop what you are doing and just breathe. Inhale to the count of 5. Now exhale for a count of 5. Repeat this action a couple of times. This will allow your racing heart to calm down and give you time to think.
Laugh at the situation. Look at your hubby. Does he look a bit silly all frantic looking. Look at the dog barking like a maniac. Now just allow yourself a moment to laugh and think how this moment would look on a television show. Remember they say laughter can cure anything, even a stressful moment.
Stop and think what will happen if you don't answer the phone. Okay, you might miss an appointment call from your boss. You can return the call. You might miss your deadline. However, you do have all day to finish that assignment. You might have to drive your husband to work, but after wards you could get yourself a real cup of coffee on the way home. As for the dog, he loves to bark and who cares if the neighbors are annoyed. Their dog barks sometimes, too.
Take a long breathe and then try to solve the problem. Throw a treat outside for the dog. Allow the answering machine to handle the phone. Remember where your husband's usually hides the keys. Remind yourself you have all day to finish that report. Once you begin to try to solve the problem you are more in control. Control is what you need to handle stress.
Practice that deep breathing regularly. Practice exercise routines or yoga on a regular basis. These types of activities will help train your body to breathe more normally even during crisis mode and stressful times.
