How to Survive Retirement

1.

While working getting up at a regular time was routine. You can still sleep in later but make it a habit to get up at the same time each day. Also be sure to shower and dress even though you may not have plans to go out.

2.

Instead of watching all those reruns, spend time exercising your mind working crossword puzzles, playing Sudoku, or trivia games. The internet is full of different sites with these mind exercising games as well as others. I know you have access to them otherwise you wouldn't be reading this article ?

3.

Make a list of all the things you wanted to do or learn how to do but never had the time, e.g. painting, fishing, golf, sewing, quilting, wine making, and photography. If you don't already know how to do them or you want to improve your skills, take a class. It will get you out of the house and around other people. You might even make some new friends. Be sure to set aside time each day or week to work on these hobbies and newly formed skills.

4.

At least once a week, get together with your family and/or friends for lunch or dinner. If you can't afford to go out, you can take turns going to each other's homes. You could even do potluck dinners where everyone brought a different dish.

Use your internet connection and make some friends who have similar interests. Facebook is one good source for making these connections.

5.

Finally, be sure to exercise regularly. You don't have to go to a gym. Take a walk, while playing golf walk rather than ride in a cart, or go for a swim. You could even do all those chores around your house or apartment that you put off for so long such as painting or cleaning windows.

You finally made it to retirement. For years you have dreamed of travelling and doing all the things you didn't have time for while working. Unfortunately thanks to a downturn in the market, your IRA is decimated and the long dreamed of trips are no longer a possibility. All the people you worked with are leading their own busy lives and you now are feeling isolated. You have watched reruns of your favorite shows so many times that you can now quote the dialogue and your clothes no longer fit because you find yourself eating while watching the reruns but that's no problem because you stay in your pajamas all day. You go to bed earlier and get up later each day. Following a few basic steps, you can change and actually enjoy your retirement. You may even find that even though you are retired there are not enough hours in the day to do all the things on your list.
