Hawthorn acts as a vasodilator, according to physician Ray Sahelian, improving circulation to the heart and the extremities. Hawthorn extract may be beneficial for people with congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, angina, high or low blood pressure and circulation disorders. Side effects are uncommon.

Hawthorn extract can cause several side effects, although they are unlikely when taking appropriate amounts. These effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, insomnia, sweating, and gastrointestinal discomfort.
