Natural Health Cures for Animals

In many cases pets are considered members of the family, and their health and medical care have become as important as that of other family members. As interest in natural medicines and therapy grows, so has their acceptance in the veterinary community. Many veterinary clinics are now beginning to incorporate natural medicines and treatments.

Acupuncture has been practiced in China for more than 3,000 years, though its efficacy remains in doubt by practitioners of Western medicine. Acupuncture is used in veterinary practice primarily to "strengthen the body's immune system," according to the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association. A common treatment for pain and the improvement of organ function, acupuncture stimulates points on the body that are believed to be channels of energy flow that have been blocked or hindered by illness or stress, practitioners say.

Herbal Medicine

Advocates of herbal medicine say that natural herbs provide vitamins and minerals not found in manufactured medicines. Nevertheless, consult with a veterinarian about any natural remedies you may be considering for your pet.

Augmentation Therapy

Augmentation therapy, also called orthomolecular medicine, is used to treat the body's deficiencies and repair tissue damage. A variety of supplemental nutrients are used that help to detoxify the body and support organ function. This form of treatment is used to "assist in the healing process," according to the AHVMA, and so requires a healthy combination of treatments that you have discussed with your veterinarian.

Responsible Care

If purchasing herbal and natural medications over the counter or online, it is important that you know what you're getting. The American Veterinary Medical Association recognizes a program created by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy called Vet-VIPPS. This seal of approval recognizes online pharmacies that the AVMA says are "appropriately licensed and have successfully completed a rigorous criteria review and inspection."
